DESCRIPTION:His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama\, Tenzin Gyatso\, describes himself as a simple Buddhist monk. He is the spiritual leader of Tibet. He was born on 6 July 1935\, to a farming family\, in a small hamlet located in Taktser\, Amdo\, northeastern Tibet. At the age of two\, the child\, then named Lhamo Dhondup\, was recognized as the reincarnation of the previous 13th Dalai Lama\, Thubten Gyatso. \nThe Dalai Lamas are believed to be manifestations of Avalokiteshvara or Chenrezig\, the Bodhisattva of Compassion and the patron saint of Tibet. Bodhisattvas are realized beings inspired by a wish to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings\, who have vowed to be reborn in the world to help humanity.

DESCRIPTION:On March 10\, 1959\, tens of thousands of Tibetans took to the streets of Lhasa\, Tibet’s capital\, rising up against China’s illegal invasion and occupation of their homeland. They surrounded the Potala Palace\, the home of the Dalai Lama\, to protect his life and the future of the Tibetan nation. Tens of thousands were killed when Chinese soldiers opened fire but the Tibetans refused to surrender\, and many risked their lives to ensure the success of the Dalai Lama’s escape into exile\, where he has been a tireless advocate for his people. \nEvery year thousands of Tibetans and their supporters take to the streets across the world to mark the anniversary of Tibetan National Uprising Day.

This is a great way to accumulate merit for yourself and help others who are experiencing food insecurities in our city. You can drop off or bring any non-perishable food items to Chikhang during Saga-Dawa month.
